The Role of Heating Mats in Ant Keeping at Home

Breeding ants at home is becoming an increasingly popular hobby. These fascinating insects, organizing themselves into complex colonies, attract the attention of both beginner entomologists and experienced breeders. However, to ensure they thrive during the upcoming winter season, a key element is maintaining the proper temperature. In this context, a heating mat becomes an invaluable tool.

Why does temperature matter in ant keeping?

Ants are cold-blooded insects, meaning their body temperature depends on the surrounding environment. In the wild, different ant species live in various climate zones, but most prefer moderate warmth. In home settings, where the temperature might be lower than what ants prefer, a heating mat helps simulate their natural environment and provides stable conditions for the colony's growth. From our experience, the optimal room temperature for ants to stay active and not sluggish is 22-25°C.

The so-called "room temperature" varies from home to home. I remember a conversation with a breeder who had a home temperature of 16-17°C during the fall and winter seasons. He wondered why his ant colony wasn’t growing, even though they were laying eggs in the summer. The reason was obvious—the breeder had been unintentionally hibernating his ants for at least half a year.

From this, we can also draw the opposite conclusion: if you have too many ants (a common concern for parents buying ant sets for the first time for their children) and don’t want to increase their numbers, you can lower the breeding temperature.

How does a heating mat affect ants?

  • Colony activity – Optimal temperature promotes worker activity. In warmer conditions, ants become more active, foraging for food, building tunnels, and caring for larvae. In too low temperatures, the colony becomes sluggish, which can hinder its development.
  • Egg and larval development – In a warmer environment, the process of egg development is faster, and larvae grow in healthier conditions. A heating mat that raises the temperature near the nest can speed up the colony's growth.
  • Stability – Ants do not tolerate sudden temperature fluctuations well. A heating mat helps maintain stable thermal conditions, which is crucial, especially during the winter season when home temperatures can drop at night.

How to properly use a heating mat?

For the heating mat to be effective, its placement is important. It’s best to place it under the formicarium arena so that the heat gradually permeates the nest. The heat from the mat should not cover the entire area of the formicarium. Ants should have the option to choose a cooler area, mimicking natural conditions where they can move to warmer or cooler spots as needed.

Which heating mats does AntCenter recommend?

In our store, we offer various mats selected according to the size of the formicarium. For example:

  • For formicaria like Lubi or Green House, we recommend the 5W mat.
  • For formicaria like Brand Next Step, we recommend the 7W mat.
  • For formicaria like Lubi Max, we recommend the 10W mat.

These mats have adjustable dials, allowing you to regulate the temperature.

Heating mats in the breeding of other animals

Many experienced breeders of other domesticated animals visit our myrmecological store. They know that this tool is also useful in the breeding of reptiles (e.g., snakes, lizards, turtles), arachnids, scorpions, mantises, amphibians (e.g., salamanders, frogs), and exotic mammals (e.g., pygmy hedgehogs). Often, ants are their next choice for a pet. Some enthusiasts even have a dozen different creatures at home.

These breeders are well aware that many of the above-mentioned animals come from warm regions, and low temperatures can induce hibernation, which may be undesirable in breeding conditions. A heating mat helps maintain a stable, friendly temperature, preventing your pet from becoming too cold.

Summary

A heating mat is a versatile and extremely useful tool that finds application in the breeding of many different species, from ants to reptiles and exotic insects.

The heating mat is one of the key elements in ant breeding, especially for those species that come from warmer regions. It ensures the right thermal conditions, supports colony development, and improves overall ant activity. Proper use of the heating mat allows not only a better understanding of the ants' needs but also ensures their healthier and faster development in home settings.

Take care of the temperature in your formicarium, and your ants will surely reward you with a dynamic and growing colony!
