Seeds – the foundation of a harvester ant’s diet
This seed mix is perfect for granivorous ants like Messor barbarus. It provides essential nutrients and will last approximately 3–4 months for a small colony.
You can scatter the seeds directly onto the formicarium arena or serve them in a feeder (e.g., 7.5 cm Ant Seed Feeder for taller formicaria, or Medium Ant Feeder for smaller setups).
Messor barbarus ants process the seeds into so-called “ant bread.” Soldiers crush the seeds, and workers grind them. Seeds are the core of a harvester ant's diet. As the colony grows, its need for protein increases.
To ensure a varied and balanced diet, we recommend also purchasing the Mega Pack for Harvester Ants, which contains a different seed composition. Since ant colonies may have different preferences, it's wise for the keeper to provide diverse food sources.
