Description
Pheidole pallidula – an active ant species with two worker castes
Pheidole pallidula is a small species native to the Mediterranean region. It has two worker castes: smaller minor workers and larger major workers with characteristically enlarged heads. Their differences and the colony’s activity make this species interesting to observe.
Species at a glance
Species: Pheidole pallidula Size: queen approximately 7–8 mm; workers approximately 2–6 mm Colour: pale honey-coloured to brownish; major workers may have a more distinctively marked head Distribution: the Mediterranean region, mainly Southern Europe and parts of North Africa Diet in the wild: small insects and other sources of protein; the species may also use seeds Diet in captivity: feeder insects as a source of protein, carbohydrate food and small seeds Hibernation: mild, at 13–15°C for around one month Temperature: approximately 20–28°C; a warmer area can be provided for the colony Difficulty: moderate — regular feeding and careful escape prevention are required Nesting: loose sandy soil, sunny areas and spaces beneath stones
What is a Pheidole pallidula colony like?
The workers differ in size. Minor workers perform most everyday tasks, while the larger major workers have enlarged heads and help with tasks such as colony defence and processing larger pieces of food.
The colony can be active while foraging. Workers quickly find food and carry it together.
Who is this species suitable for?
This species is a good choice for anyone who wants to observe a colony with clearly distinct worker castes. Keeping it requires regular attention, a varied diet and effective escape prevention. It is best suited to keepers prepared to meet these needs.
How should you feed Pheidole pallidula?
The colony’s diet should include protein, primarily appropriately sized feeder insects, and a carbohydrate source such as honey or food made for ants. Small seeds can also be offered. Match food portions to the colony’s size and remove uneaten food regularly.
How should you set up a formicarium?
Choose a nest suited to the colony’s current size. An oversized nest may make it harder for the ants to use the space and for you to observe the colony. Provide constant access to water and carefully secure the connections between the nest and the outworld. Small workers may escape through narrow gaps, so an effective escape barrier is also important.
Important information
Pheidole pallidula is not native to Poland. Do not release the ants or their offspring into the environment. If you can no longer keep the colony, contact AntCenter about transferring it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Pheidole pallidula have soldiers? The colony has two worker castes: minor workers and larger major workers. The latter are sometimes informally called soldiers, but they are part of the worker caste.
What should you feed this species? The diet should include protein, such as feeder insects, and a carbohydrate source. Small seeds can also be offered.
Does Pheidole pallidula need hibernation? Yes. This species needs a mild hibernation period at 13–15°C for around one month.
