Manica rubida in captivity – what you need to know
Often called the "large red ant", Manica rubida is known for its striking appearance and powerful predatory behavior. In Poland, it’s sometimes referred to as Wścieklica dorodna – a name reflecting its intense character.
In captivity, this species feeds readily on honey and live insects, such as mealworms and small crickets.
However, it’s important to note that Manica rubida is considered a challenging species to raise, particularly in the early stages. The queen is highly sensitive during the founding phase, which requires stability, peace, and precise feeding.
Semi-claustral founding – what does it mean?
Manica rubida queens follow a semi-claustral founding strategy – they must forage outside the test tube to feed and survive. That’s why we recommend starting with a mini arena, where you can offer both protein (insects) and carbohydrates (honey) directly to a solitary queen.
