I am a beginner in ant farming. Which set with ants to choose for the beginning?
These are the questions we get most often from potential ant breeders.
The client does not know the subject at all or already knows quite a lot, but in the maze of contradictory information, he prefers to ask us per advise.
I have to add that the inquirers are usually very responsible, they don't want to make any mistake in the farming of ants, and they want good both for the ants and for the novice breeder. Personally, I sincerely admire our clients' sensitivity to nature.
Back to the topic:
Please answer the following questions before purchasing ant farm:
1) What is my budget?
2) What is the age of the potential ant breeder?
3) Where will the formicarium be located? How much space can we allocate for it?
4) How do we want to observe the ants (vertical or horizontal)?
Below there are some of our suggestions depending on your needs:
Small budget for an ant farm
I have a small budget (up to PLN 200) I don't want to invest a lot, these are the first ants, I don't know if my child will like this hobby (the child is up to 10 years old)
Our proposal is:
It is best to choose the largest possible colony so that it can be settled immediately into formicarium.
Below 13/15 ants, the colony must be farmed in a test tube before colonization.

Child over 10
My child (over 10 years old) has already watched many videos on YT, he knows more about ants than I do. I have a medium-sized budget (up to PLN 300-350)
Our proposal is:
Children like colorful things, they like partitions (opening/closing), they like dimming covers, in a word, such various gadgets that are pleasing to the eye. In this set, we recommend choosing a cover that darkens the nest (for the sake of ants, they usually live underground, and only come to the surface from time to time)

Medium-sized budget for an ant farm
I want to create conditions for ants as close to nature as possible. I have a medium-sized budget.
For such a client, our proposal is:
Here, depending on the budget, the client chooses a larger or smaller colony of Messor barbarus ants.

Most popular T-shaped formikarium
My child has watched many YT videos and wants a T-shaped formicarium.
We have such a set, when buying it, you should pay attention to watering (that's why it is not included in our sets for beginners), children like to lead the nest part of the formicarium:
Depending on your budget, there is a choice of ants here:
Lasius niger - our native Polish ants
or Messor barbarus - interesting ants with caste division from Southern Europe (so-called harvesters)
When choosing an ant species, remember to buy different foods.
Heating mat for ants
If you buy a set with ants in the cold winter months, and the temperature in the room with the formicarium is below 22 degrees, it is worth buying a heating mat - we offer several types:
