Description
Lasius flavus (Yellow meadow ant) – yellow ants ideal for beginners
Lasius flavus is a calm, yellow ant species that is very well suited for beginner ant keepers. It is native to Europe, lives mostly underground and forms stable, long-lived colonies that are perfect for observation at home.

Species description
In the wild Lasius flavus builds its nests in soil, often in meadows, slopes and at the edges of forests. The mounds are usually covered with grass, which makes the colonies hard to spot. Nests can often be found under stones in slightly moist areas.
The species is fully claustral – the queen founds the colony on her own and raises the first workers from her own reserves. This makes Lasius flavus an excellent choice if you want to start from a single queen caught after the nuptial flight.
Compared to many other species, these ants move rather slowly and are not very aggressive. This calm behaviour makes them comfortable to observe and forgiving for new keepers.
Feeding and basic care
In captivity you can feed Lasius flavus with:
- small feeder insects (e.g. mealworms, fruit flies),
- honey or sugar-water solutions,
- ant jellies and commercial carbohydrate mixes.
Always offer both a protein source (insects) and a carbohydrate source (honey, sugar mixes). Remove uneaten food regularly to keep the setup clean and to avoid mould.
Housing and temperature
Because Lasius flavus is a soil-dwelling ant, soil nests are the most natural option. As a compromise between visibility and comfort, you can also use cork nests or compact acrylic formicaria with a darker or red cover over the nest area.
Recommended temperature: 22–26°C – in most heated homes no additional heat mat is needed.
Hibernation: 1–3 months at around 5°C during winter.
Why choose Lasius flavus?
Lasius flavus is often recommended as a first ant species because:
- it is calm and not very aggressive,
- it tolerates minor mistakes better than many exotic species,
- the yellow workers are very distinctive and attractive,
- the colony grows slowly but steadily, making it easy to follow its development,
- the species is suitable for educational projects and older children (under adult supervision).
What next?
If you are looking for a calm, robust and interesting species to start ant keeping, Lasius flavus is an excellent choice. Add the colony to your cart and then choose a suitable nest, outworld and basic feeding accessories to create a complete setup.
