How Many Ants Live in an Anthill? Facts, Numbers, and Curiosities

One of the most common questions asked by people interested in ants is: how many ants live in a single anthill? The answer is not straightforward, as colony size depends on the species, the age of the colony, and environmental conditions. In practice, the difference can be enormous – from just a few dozen individuals to hundreds of thousands, and in rare cases even millions of ants.

How many ants can live in one anthill?

Ant colonies vary greatly in size. In general, they can be divided into several categories:

  • small colonies – from a few dozen to a few thousand ants
  • medium-sized colonies – from several thousand to tens of thousands of individuals
  • large forest anthills – up to hundreds of thousands of ants
  • supercolonies – in exceptional cases, millions of ants

The two most important factors influencing colony size are the ant species and the age of the colony.

What determines the number of ants in an anthill?

Ant species

Some species naturally form small colonies, while others are adapted to build large, complex societies. Forest ants and seed-harvesting ants are known for creating extensive anthills, whereas smaller species usually maintain more modest nests.

Age of the anthill

A young colony founded by a single queen starts with only a few workers. It often takes several seasons for the colony to reach its full size and stability.

Environmental conditions

Access to food, stable temperatures, humidity, and a safe nesting location all strongly influence colony growth. Under favorable conditions, an ant colony can grow rapidly year after year.

How many ants live in a forest anthill?

Forest anthills, especially those built by ants of the genus Formica, are among the largest in temperate climates.

A single forest anthill may contain:

  • from 100,000 to 500,000 ants
  • and in some cases even more

It is important to remember that many forest anthills are legally protected, and damaging or disturbing them is prohibited.

Can an anthill have more than one queen?

Yes – this depends on the ant species.

  • monogynous colonies – one queen per colony
  • polygynous colonies – multiple queens living together in one anthill

Colonies with multiple queens often reach larger sizes but are also more complex in terms of social organization.

Anthills in nature vs ant keeping

In nature, an anthill is a highly complex system of tunnels and chambers that ants expand and modify over many years.

In ant keeping, the situation is different:

  • natural forest anthills are not recreated
  • colonies are observed in formicariums inspired by natural conditions
  • colony size is controlled and safe
  • ant keeping does not interfere with natural ecosystems

This allows responsible observation of ant behavior without harming nature or destroying wild anthills.

Why do large ant colonies fascinate people?

Ants are one of the best examples of social organization in the natural world. They cooperate, communicate using chemical signals, and construct complex structures without a central leader. The scale and efficiency of their colonies continue to fascinate scientists and nature enthusiasts alike.
