Camponotus herculeanus (or Hercules Ant ) lives mainly in shady forests, rarely mid-forest glades and clearings, nests are built in the decaying stumps and roots as well as in wood of coniferous trees, primarily selecting trees weakened by fungi, boring channels and building chambers.
Camponotus herculeanus belongs to the large ants. These ants are prey, although their main food is honeydew of aphids and juice (they can cut buds) and the nectar of some plants. It is active mainly at night. Herkules Ant creates colonies monogynous, meaning that the colony has only one queen.
Tip for breeding:
In the case of the purchase of small colonies, we recommend to breed the ants in a test tube to a quantity of 12-15 workers before being released to the formicarium. Otherwise, the ants may feel lost and the colony will grow more slowly.
