Why Do Ant Keepers Need a Hygrometer and Thermometer?
In a home ant colony, proper temperature and humidity are crucial for the health and development of the colony. Two fundamental tools that help control these conditions are the thermometer and hygrometer. They allow the keeper to continuously monitor the temperature and humidity in the formicarium, ensuring optimal living conditions for the ants.
Why Is Temperature So Important in Ant Keeping?
Ants come from various regions around the world, and as a result, they have different temperature requirements. It is understandable that tropical colonies will need higher temperatures than those living in our cooler areas.
The recommended optimal temperature for ant keeping in our geographical area is between 22-26°C. At too low temperatures, ants are less active, which affects their behavior and reproduction. Conversely, excessively high temperatures can lead to dehydration and stress.
For tropical ants, the average temperature for keeping them is around 30°C. Below this temperature, ants will still develop, but their growth will occur at a slower pace.
The Role of Humidity in Antkeeping
In addition to temperature, humidity is an equally important parameter that can determine the success of the colony. Species from tropical regions prefer high humidity levels, above 80%. For ants from our geographical area, the recommended humidity is between 50-70%.
Humidity supports the health of the colony and facilitates food transport and the maintenance of appropriate conditions in the nest. A lack of moisture can lead to the drying out of eggs and larvae, which is especially dangerous for young colonies. On the other hand, excessively high humidity promotes the growth of mold and other microorganisms, which can be harmful to ants. If combined with irregular cleaning of the formicarium or feeding with rapidly decomposing foods, it creates the perfect recipe for the most common disease among ants: mites.
Which Thermometers and Hygrometers to Choose?
There are various types of thermometers and hygrometers available on the market, differing in price, accuracy, and functionality.
For formicariums, it's best to consider purchasing a thermo-hygrometer that combines both functions, making it easier to control conditions. In the case of large formicariums, it is wise to have more than one set of sensors (in the arena and near the nest) to ensure that every area of the colony has suitable conditions.
At AntCenter, you will find both freestanding thermo-hygrometers and those with suction cups.
The most commonly purchased set with a hygrometer can be found here: Myrmecologist's Toolkit.
Regular Monitoring of Temperature and Humidity as a Recipe for the Health of Ant Colonies
By regularly monitoring temperature and humidity, the keeper can quickly respond to any changes and adjust conditions accordingly. A thermometer and hygrometer are essential yet invaluable tools that provide the ant colony with a stable and safe environment, which translates into their health and the success of the colony.
